“Fear of the Dark” is a solo, push-your-luck board game that combines tile placement with a chilling horror theme. Drawing inspiration from one of humanity’s most primal fears, it immerses you in an unknown environment where the only real threat is the oppressive darkness. With only a limited number of matches and your dwindling common sense to guide you, you must navigate the maze.
The game unfolds in two distinct phases: When holding a lit match, you can use your cards to take actions—moving, exploring, or searching—or activate their more powerful abilities, though doing so will deplete the card permanently, draining your precious common sense. When the match is out, the situation becomes far more dire. Each card played is consumed, and your grip on reality slips further as you struggle to maintain focus in the suffocating dark.
As you explore, you must carefully place tiles to chart your escape, all while contending with obstacles and traps. The tension between caution and urgency is palpable; rushing forward may put you in danger, but hesitation will only lead to certain defeat.
Victory requires boldness. As your matches run out, so too does your common sense. If you’re not careful, you’ll be left stranded in the dark, unable to move, and ultimately, unable to escape. To succeed, you must take risks and press on until you find the last door—your only path to freedom.
